History of the Stations of the Cross
The tradition of the Stations of the Cross dates back to the early centuries of Christianity when pilgrims traveled to Jerusalem to walk in the footsteps of Jesus. As Christianity spread, it became difficult for many believers to make the pilgrimage to the Holy Land. To provide an alternative way for the faithful to meditate on Christ’s Passion, various churches in Europe began creating their own stations.
During the 13th and 14th centuries, the Franciscans, who were given custody of the Holy Places in Jerusalem, played a crucial role in popularizing this devotion. They established 14 stations corresponding to significant moments of Christ’s suffering and death. Pope Clement XII officially recognized the practice in the 18th century, and it became a widespread tradition in Catholic churches worldwide.
Today, the Stations of the Cross remain a central Lenten devotion, helping Christians reflect on Christ’s sacrifice and apply His lessons of love and endurance to their own lives. (Learn how to pray Rosary in Latin).
Prayers Before The Stations
God, I am heartily sorry for having offended O Thee, and I detest all my sins, because I dread the loss of heaven and the pains of hell, but most of all because they offend Thee, my God, who art all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Thy grace, to confess my sins, to do penance, and to amend my life.My Lord Jesus Christ, with a contrite heart and a penitential spirit, I purpose now to make the Way of the Cross in commemoration of Thy most bitter Passion, and of Thy most sorrowful death on Calvary. I adore Thee and bless Thee, O God of infinite mercy. With all my heart I thank Thee, divine Saviour, for the unutterable love which caused Thee to endure for me the cruel death of the Cross. Amen.
