What is an Affogato

What is an Affogato?

In the Italian language affogato’ means ‘drowned’ and this is an espresso-based dessert name.

An affogato is made by pouring a shot of espresso over a scoop of ice cream. Sometimes, it may contain a shot of liqueur, such as Frangelico, Baileys, or amaretto. Classic affogato is usually served with a teaspoon in a glass.

In Italy, it is often called ‘affogato al caffe’ which means ‘dipped in coffee’, as the ice cream is metaphorically drowned in the espresso shot.

Many people are still confused about how to eat this dessert. They get confused about whether it’s appropriate to sip the espresso or wait for the gelato to melt.

Here’s how you can eat Affogato:

  • Grab a teaspoon.
  • Scoop some gelato dipped with some espresso.
  • Try to finish your affogato dessert before the ice cream melts completely.

So, the Italian treat is quite easy to make and it tastes great.

How strong is an affogato shot?

An affogato shot contains 60 to 75 milligrams of caffeine. The total amount of caffeine depends on the type of roast and base beverage.

If you pour an affogato shot over vanilla ice cream, the caffeine is just coming from the coffee.

When adding a shot to a frappuccino, the total amount of caffeine is the sum of the base drink and the affogato shot.

What does affogato taste like?

An affogato tastes just like coffee ice cream or a frappuccino, which is true, but there’s more to this creamy drink than what you can pick up in a carton at the grocery store or your local Starbucks.

You can add additional toppings to your affogato to customize the flavor to your liking. You can add toppings like candied almonds, caramel drizzles, whipped cream, and more. If you like your desserts sweet and salty, top your affogato with some salted caramel. Since affogatos only have two main basic ingredients, you can spice it up with lots of add-ins to change up the flavor and make this dessert your own.

Is affogato stronger than espresso?

Affogato-style shots are basically espresso shots poured over or over something. If you order a latte affogato, the barista will add the milk first and then pour the espresso shot on top, instead of adding the espresso shot and the milk later.

An espresso shot contains only 75 mg of caffeine, which is in the drink. An affogato-style caramel frappuccino contains 125 milligrams of caffeine, the equivalent of a tall Starbucks iced coffee if you need a little more energy. From that, you can guess that affogato is stronger than espresso.
