Coffee is a beloved beverage known for its ability to fine-tune your focus and boost your energy levels. Today in this article, we will discuss the health benefits of drinking coffee.

What are the health benefits of coffee?

Increases energy levels

Coffee contains caffeine, a central nervous system stimulant known for its ability to fight fatigue and increase energy levels.

That’s because caffeine blocks receptors for a neurotransmitter called adenosine, and it increases levels of other neurotransmitters in your brain that regulate your energy levels, including dopamine.

Coffee reduces body fat

“Caffeine can also promote a healthy weight, support gut health, and alter fat storage, which is associated with weight management, which reduces the risk of certain conditions, such as associated with heart problems,” says Dr. Boyer.

In a 2019 review, researchers found that high levels of coffee consumption were associated with lower body fat levels, particularly among men. Another 2020 study showed the same effect in women.

Increases physical activity

In a 2018 study, researchers linked coffee consumption to increased physical activity. They found that female coffee drinkers who drank one to two cups of coffee per day were 17% more likely to meet recommended physical activity levels than those who drank less.

Reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes

Drinking coffee reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes. When blood sugar is high, it can lead to potentially serious health problems.

Reduces the risk of liver disease

Coffee may support liver health. Liver disease is a serious condition that can lead to life-threatening health complications, including cirrhosis.

A 2017 review noted that a daily cup of coffee can reduce the risk of death from chronic liver disease by 15%. Coffee lovers can be happy to know that drinking four cups per day equates to a 71% lower risk.

Drinking two cups of coffee has also been linked to a 43% reduction in the risk of liver cancer.

Enhances heart health

Coffee may help protect against heart disease and improve heart health. By protecting heart health, coffee may also reduce the risk of death.

A 2018 review noted that people who drank three to five cups of coffee per day were 15% less likely to develop heart disease. Another large 2021 study of more than 21,000 people support these findings and concludes that coffee consumption significantly reduces the risk of heart failure.

It can also lower blood pressure. In a 2017 study, researchers found that drinking 7 cups a day meant a 9% lower risk of high blood pressure, with a further 1% reduction for each additional cup.

Improves skin health

Coffee also has benefits for your skin. Applying liquid coffee to the skin or as a scrub made from the ground can help with skin problems such as eczema, psoriasis, and acne.

Is it good to drink coffee every day?

Having that first cup of coffee in the morning can sometimes feel downright magical, especially if you’ve had a particularly drawn-out day. But be careful if you find yourself doing it every day because you might get addicted.

If you drink coffee for s long period of time you can become addicted to caffeine. The reason for that addiction is that coffee normally binds to adenosine receptors in the brain – adenosine is what causes sleep stress. However, over time, the body produces more adenosine receptors that are no longer bound by the caffeine in coffee.

As a result, your energy levels drop and you need coffee to combat withdrawal symptoms. And those symptoms can include irritability, brain fog, headaches, and fatigue, according to Healthline.
